On the journey of loving and caring for myself, I have learned so much, and so have so many others. Above all, self-love and self-care are two ideas that we all have to be very intentional about. This is mostly so we can see the results we set out to see. And also to reap the lifelong benefits of self-care as a daily practice. Because of this, I set out to discover what are some of the ways that every day women practice self-love on a daily basis.

Here you’ll find some proven ways that women are taking care of themselves…and how you can too!

1. Manage your anxiety & stress levels

One way I practice self care is by taking care of my mental health. It makes all the difference. Managing my anxiety and stress levels makes me more able to show up in the world.

Depending on the amount of anxiety and stress you feel will determine the intervention needed. For low levels, you can try removing yourself for the present situations. Or engaging in stress-relieving activities, such as getting as massage or sleep.

2. Write out affirmations

I write affirmations in my journal that help remind me of my own strengths and positive traits.

Writing out affirmations is a powerful tool to ensure you make self love and self care a daily habit. Once making these a consistent part of your regimen, you’ll find yourself in tune with your innermost desires. In addition, to being able to gain clarity on decisions you need to make in your life.

3. Being STILL

I make time for stillness, or if time permits, a combination of prayer, reflection, mindfulness and breathework.

I make sure to regularly allow myself to just be instead of always doing all the time. That consistent allowance gives me the mental space I need to carry on with my work.

Sometimes just good ol’ fashion going to sit down somewhere to relax is all that’s needed. The hustle and bustle and busy schedules can just be physically and mentally draining at times. Not to mention experiencing a ‘new normal’ during a pandemic! Remember, to just BE still to reassess what’s most important and how to move forward.

4. Journal writing/meditating

I utilize journaling my reflections as a foundation for getting in tune for what I need/want. This partnered with focused meditation and affirmations is my recipe for nurturing myself.

Journal writing is a form of therapy and diving inward, particularly if done consistently. Research shows that journaling can have many positive impacts on a person’s well-being. My favorite journal and pens (yes I’m a stationary freak) can be found on Amazon.

Some of the positive changes I’ve experienced are increased clarity when I feel indecisive, tracking of my thoughts, behaviors and triumphs. As well as, support in forming new habits for myself.

Morning meditations have allowed me to start my day grounded in the affirmation of the day. This allows me to proceed with confidence in my abilities and things I am working. All in the spirit of being more intentional about what I want for myself. You can check out my 4 Easy Steps to Meditation to begin building your daily meditation habits.

5. Practicing mindfulness

Using mindfulness techniques, I’ve started to become a lot more aware of the little signals my body us telling me. Our bodies hold so much wisdom and when we can learn to tap into that, we are able to practice self love from an intentional place!

Practicing mindfulness is usually partnered with meditation. According to mindful.org, mindfulness is “the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.” A few ways you can put this into practice is:

  • focusing on your breathing (inhaling and exhaling)
  • paying close attention to the sensations in your body
  • accepting what is (your thoughts and feelings)

6. Living with intention

I practice self love by putting my happiness first. I make sure to do something daily that makes me smile: splurge on self care days or products and read a devotional to ensure my spirit is happy and grounded in the love of God.

Tuesday is on a mission to make the world more beautiful- inside & out. Her site is about beauty & lifestyle that takes a realistic approach to the individual pursuit of happiness by encouraging you to self-evaluate, meditate and splurge on self-care when necessary.

We all have choices and the choices we make each day produce results, positive or negative. Starting each day making the choice to live a happy life isn’t just something you say. You actually have to LIVE it. Just like Tuesday, I love a good face cream. One of my absolute favorite splurge items is Lancome Genifique face serum.

It a crucial aspect of self-care to treat yourself, but I would also add to be mindful of your splurge purchases. You shouldn’t be going into debt or not be able to maintain your normal bills for the sake of your ‘splurge.’ As this will bring on more stress in the long run.

7. Scheduling alone time

My kids range from 14-32, the oldest has a stepson who is autistic. Their ages and circumstances leave them needing me in various ways. So, for my self love, I have started home “business hours.” That way, a time is designated for ME and it is no one else’s business!!! LOL

The biggest way I practice self love is by specifically scheduling down time. Scheduling an hour or two of time specifically to not work helps me recharge at the end of a day and not feel overwhelmed.

Your time is yours

You can choose the self-love and self-care routines that best suit you, your personality and lifestyle. There’s no time like the present to start being more intentional about your life, and particularly your time. If you don’t already, start carving out bit of time for yourself and see what happens. I’m positive that you will become more aware of what your desires are. And then will begin to start articulating those to others, where you deem necessary.

I’ll leave you with some soothing music that you can relax to while you think about how you want to love on yourself a bit more.  And let me know in the comments which method(s) you’e tried or if you’ve found successful in any other ways to show self-love.
